There are probably a few readers who are wondering why I'm bothering to write a blog post about serialized fiction. After all, it's been around for decades. But unless an author sets out with the intention of writing serialized fiction, it often doesn't cross their mind as a publishing option. Sooo...,
What is Serialized Fiction?
Serialized fiction can be two things. It could be a series of short stories involving the same characters and loosely following a timeline. More commonly, it is one long story or plot arc, broken up into smaller chapters or episodes. Both versions of serialized fiction require that the chapters/stories be published regularly, and that there are many, many chapters or short stories.
The most widely know type of serialized fiction in written form, are comics. However, the type of serialized fiction I'm talking about is not illustrated. It is just the equivilent of a novel broken down into smaller sections published over a period of time. Many authors may argue that it is a completely different kind of writing when pacing a long form story and serial fiction. And while the isue of pacing may be true, writing is writing. It's adaptable and editable.
Serialized fiction in the form of webnovels and podcasts has become very popular over the years.
