Two  2-Ounce cups of duckweed.

Duckweed is a great plant for wildlife ponds, aquaculture systems, freshwater aquariums, turtle tanks, and paludariums. It is a supplemental food for herbivorous and omnivorous turtles, as well as fish like:

  • guppies
  • carp
  • goldfish
  • mollies
  • bettas
  • loaches
  • tilapia
  • corydoras
  • koi
  • grass carp
  • cichlids
  •

In wildlife ponds duckweed is eaten by frogs, beavers, mice, woodchucks, and of course, ducks and can be an important component in a healthy aquatic habitat.

This little plant multiplies quickly and makes a great shelter for shy aquarium fish.

Duckweed reduces mosquitos in ponds by covering the water surface and reducing egglaying. It acts as a biological filter of water and reduces nutrients as well as nitrogen in the water column. Excess plants can be shared with fellow hobbyists, used as compost, and even fed to worms in vermiculture.
